Letter, Sept. 27, 1840.

Letter, sent from Circleville, Ill., to Thabius Bancroft in Grafton, Vermont from where he had just returned from a visit. Describes his trip back and the quality of land along the way. Describes the fertility of his land in Illinois and its superiority to Vermont. Mentions problems with the British Fur Company in Oregon Territory and the Russians in the west. Also discusses talking with [Thomas J.] Farnham re: his expedition to California.

Thomas Jefferson Farnham emigrated overland to Oregon in 1839 as a member of the Peoria Party, serving as captain. He spent some time at Fort Vancouver and wrote about Oregon, before traveling to the Hawaiian Islands. He died in San Francisco, California on September 13, 1848.
